On 28 April 2023 Niti Foundation organized an interaction on “Conflict of Interest and Impunity in Nepal”. The event brought together former justices, former finance ministers, parliamentarians, constitutional experts, retired secretaries, independent researchers, retired police and army officials, a retired auditor general, development contractors and representatives from industrial and financial sector to discuss the nexus between public procurement and conflict of interest with corruption and impunity.
The discussion focused on the need for policy and behavioural reform as well as legal reform. Addressing public procurement and conflict of interest via both avenues is essential to tackle corruption and impunity in Nepal. Moreover, the discussion focused on the critical role of Nepal’s Parliament, which is the body responsible for translating ethical and moral standards into legal standards in the public procurement process and thus central for reform efforts.
